Construction Choir Collective (CCC) was established in 2019 as part of the project StadtLabore – “Friederike”, initiated by Daniel Aschwanden, Michael Wallraff, Pavel Naydenov, and Magdalena Hubauer. The collective combines a cappella singing with performative and vocal elements, redefining the perception of the classical choral concert.
Our mission is to take choral music beyond grand concert halls, making it accessible to all in public spaces and unexpected environments. Our repertoire spans medieval madrigals, folk music, and contemporary experimental works, with our signature blue workwear, Blaumann, allowing us to blend into our surroundings.
Since its founding, CCC has performed at over 50 concerts and major Vienna festivals, including Wiener Festwochen, Parallel Vienna, and Vienna Art Week. In 2023, we organized the international choral festival "Vokale Verwandlungen".
CCC operates as a collective where all members contribute to its artistic development. Musical direction and rehearsals are led by conductors Pavel Naydenov, Magdalena Hubauer, and Johannes Steinmann.

Construction Choir Collective (CCC) was founded in the summer of 2019 as part of the “Friederike” project within the framework of StadtLabore, led by Daniel Aschwanden, Michael Wallraff, Pavel Naydenov, and Magdalena Hubauer. The project aimed to create space for art, culture, and music in public spaces, using a roof construction that needed people to support it—becoming a metaphor for the collective spirit. This is where we got our name, Construction Choir Collective, and our signature workwear, the Blaumann.
The collective's spirit was so strong after this project that we decided to keep going without hesitation. We embarked on numerous performative and musical projects, such as self-organized staircase concerts to bring neighbors together, performances at Wiener Festwochen, Urbanize, and excursions to Bulgaria to meet choirs from different cultures. We even held a concert on a sightseeing bus, sharing the story of our collective.
Over the past four years, CCC has become recognized as a non-traditional choir with a diverse repertoire and a focus on site-specific projects. We’ve addressed themes like public space, human rights, freedom of speech, gender politics, and feminism, but never as an activist choir. Instead, we see ourselves as a poetic tool, opening dialogues with the audience through our music.
We have participated in over 50 projects with partners such as StadtLabore, Urbanize Festival, Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, Belvedere 21 Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst, SOHO Ottakring Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Vienna Art Week, and more.
Even Corona didn’t stop us; we continued rehearsing on Zoom calls, following YouTube tutorials. What keeps us together is our shared vision, spirit, and bond. In the summer of 2019, we collectively dreamed a beautiful dream, and though circumstances change and members come and go, the collective endures—transforming the atmosphere of cities and their people through our voices.
